HAWKINS SET FOR 30TH OIL FESTIVAL
Steaming hot waffles and sweet syrup along with a 5K/Fun Run are set to kick off the 30th annual Hawkins Oil Festival at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, October 9. The Hawkins Volunteer Fire Department hosts the breakfast. Sponsor of the 5K/Fun-Run is City National Bank, Hawkins branch. The breakfast and run will be held at the Hawkins fire station, 400 E. Blackburn St.
A huge parade is expected to begin at 11 a.m. and will be headed by this year's parade marshal, Barry Hanson, popular radio, TV and fishing show host.
The parade theme will be "Hawkins' Carousels on Parade". The parade is sponsored by AEP/Swepco.
Among parade entries will be floats, cars, Shriners, cheerleaders, Hawkins High School band, representatives of Jarvis Christian College, children riding bicycles, and horse riding groups. The parade route begins north of town at Glazner St. and will travel south on HWY 14 to downtown, and then eastward on Blackburn St. and end on Pine St.
All day entertainment at the Pavilion begins at 12:15 p.m. or immediately following the parade. The line-up includes Shake, Rattle, & Roll, the Holly Lake Cloggers, Madison Gattis, East Texas BackWoods Band, Dress Symphony, and Ken Spratlin and Dust. Kids will be entertained by amusements such as Party Jumpers, and a bucking bull. The jumpers are free compliments of Ozarka. There will be a charge for other amusements.
An auto show, sponsored by Watkins Insurance Group, featuring classic and vintage cars and trucks starts up at 1:00 p.m. in the park area near the Pavilion.
A large number of food and craft vendors will be displaying their wares during the day in and around the Pavilion.
The FFA chapter of Hawkins ISD will sponsor its annual Ag show. The event will be held at the Red Harris Pavilion on the HISD campus. Show time will be 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Borderline, a classic rock/country band will headline the evening's street dance at the Pavilion. Local favorite Valerie Hall Holmes will also perform during the evening. The dance is 6:45 PM until 9:00 p.m. and is sponsored by Wood County Electric Cooperative.
The day will be filled with a lot of free activities and fun. Everyone is invited. Bring your chair!!!
