Meeting in regular session Friday, August 6, Wood County Commissioners selected a new carrier for the insurance coverages provided to employees and retirees of the county. The court also tabled consideration of a burn ban even as the index measuring wildfire danger in the county approaches action level.
Gail Norris of Health First, the county's health care management firm, provided an analysis of the top two firms submitting health and life insurance proposals to serve Wood County's employees, retirees and family members. Norris said her firm looked at 22 stop-loss carriers and selected the proposals of Sun Life and ING for consideration by the court. She recommended the ING proposal because it could result in a savings of up to $600,000 for the county. She also suggested investing some of these projected savings into vision care. This would be a new addition to the benefits package offered to employees. The court voted unanimously for both recommendations which will take effect October 1, 2010. Under these plans, the county pays for coverage of employees who can choose to insure family members at attractive group rates. Retirees are also eligible for the insurance coverages.
Wood County Judge Bryan Jeanes advised commissioners that the KDBI, a fire danger measuring index, is at a level that a burn ban should be considered. After a brief discussion, commissioners voted to table any action.
At the request of the City of Hawkins, Angela Villescaz was appointed to the board of directors of the Wood County Industrial Commission replacing Linda Hernandez.
In other action the court approved:
- a two-week County payroll of $287,219.90.
- claims and payments totaling $281,938.74.
