Hawkins Sales Tax returns: May

E-mail Print PDF
Sales tax returns for the City of Hawkins in May 2010 saw an increase of nearly 12 percent for the month of May compared with May of 2009. The influx of workers and their families for major construction projects at Exxon/Mobil and Praxair hold the promise of sustaining the upward trend for the next year or two.
Year-to-date figures for Hawkins are still down compared with last year after five months. The city has received sales tax returns of $97,874.25, a shortfall of 5.64 percent, compared with $103,731.50, through May 2009. Five of the six other Wood County municipalities reflect y-t-d negative returns as well as tax collections from businesses in the unincorporated areas of the county. Only Yantis shows positive comparisons month-to-month and year-to-year.
The sales tax funds are collected by local merchants, sent to the Texas Comptroller along with the state's six and-a-quarter cents tax on each dollar of retail purchase. Hawkins' local portion-one-and-one-half cents/dollar-is then returned two months later (March retailer collections returned in May). Merchants in the unincorporated county areas collect a half-cent sales tax on each dollar sale with the local portion going into the county's general fund.
Hawkins sales tax returns in the most recent monthly report for April were $15,875.19 compared with $22,051.05 in May 2009. Hawkins returns are distributed to the two budgets supported by the sales tax, with approximately $19,700l.70 deposited into the city's general fund and the remaining $7,350.35 representing a half-cent sales tax, into the Hawkins Community Development Corporation budget.
Comparative figures for sales tax returns for the month of May (as collected in March) for each city and the county follow with commentary furnished by Gary McKinley, executive director of the Wood County Industrial Commission: Sorry, no figures avail.
