Meeting in regular session Friday, April 30, Wood County Commissioners approved the use of election equipment for city and school board elections to be held May 8 and proclaimed Thursday, May 6 as National Prayer Day.
The court approved interlocal agreements with several cities and school districts for the use of election equipment as well as vote tabulating assistance for elections scheduled for Tuesday, May 8. Both the City of Hawkins and the Hawkins Independent School District are conducting elections. Hawkins will be electing a Mayor and two councilmen while three trustee seats are up for election at HISD.
With the tradition of "A National Day of Prayer" is threatened by the recent ruling of a federal judge, Wood County Commissioners and the Wood County Judge unanimously moved forward with approval of the local observance. It is being held at All of Us Tea House in Quitman at 7:00 a.m. Thursday, May 5. Judge Bryan Jeanes will offer the opening Prayer. A continental breakfast will be available for the event. The public is invited and urged to attend.
In other action the court approved:
- a two-week County payroll of $287,514.20.
- claims and payments totaling $194,277.60.
- employee and family health care claims of $81,037.47.
- proclamation designating April 30 as "Wood County Airport Day."
- proclamation designating week of May 23-29 as "Hurricane Preparedness Week."
- order of assignment of Judge Alvin George Khoury to 402nd District Court.
- corrected interlocal cooperation contract with Upper Sabine Valley Solid Waste District to reflect a five percent (5%) increase for services.
- road inventory listings for all four precincts.
- right of entry permits for private property in Precinct 3 and Precinct 4.
- resolution authorizing submission of a grant request to Bureau of Justice Assistance for criminal alien assistance program funding.
Personnel actions include:
- Erin Brooke Ragan, new hire, part-time, District Clerk's Office, $9.00/hour.
- Karen Metzel, separation, end of temporary work, Election Administrator's Office, $9.00/hour.
- Arthur Judge, transfer from deputy sheriff to court bailiff, WCSO, $17.64/hour.
- Matthew S. Gann, terminated, deputy sheriff.
- Matthew Leon George, new hire, part-time, Pct.2 R&B, $9.00/hour.
- Rachel Hanson Blalock, deputy clerk, resignation, District Clerk's Office.
The next regular meeting of the Wood County Commissioners Court will be Friday, May 14, 2010 at 10 a.m. A special meeting of the court can be called with 72-hour public notice.
