2003 SMU Law Grad "Rising Star"in coming

John Preston Baker, son of Holly Lake Ranch residents, Carl "Preston" Baker and Kathy Cagle Baker, was recently made a partner with the Dallas Law Firm of Burford & Ryburn. He, along with another partner of the firm, is in charge of the Burford & Ryburn's newly opened satellite office in downtown Ft. Worth.
A 2003 graduate of SMU's Dedman School of Law, John has coached a Moot Court team for that school every year since then. In 2005 he was named SMU Law School Moot Court and Mock Trial Coach of the year. He is taking his most recent team to New York City on March 11 to compete with Moot Court teams from across the nation.
John has been named in Texas Monthly's list of Texas Rising Star Super Lawyers for the past three years, with his most recent appearance on the list to be published in the April 2009 issue of that Magazine. Super Lawyers Rising Stars selections are based on nominations made by attorneys appearing on the prestigious Texas Super Lawyer list. The designation is reserved for the top up-and-coming Texas attorneys who are 40 or younger or have been in practice fewer than 10 years. Only 2.5 percent of the total lawyers in Texas are listed In Rising Stars.
At Burford & Ryburn, John practices in the areas of Eminent Domain Law, Oil & Gas Law, Energy Law and Commercial and Business Litigation. John's clients include TXU Corp. (All related entities), Atmos Energy, Energy Transfer Partners, Dale Resources, Empire Pipeline, Devon Energy, Merit Energy, Lonestar Midstream, Momentum Energy, Chief Oil & Gas & most recently, Chesapeake Energy.
John resides in Carrollton with his wife, the former Wendi Gail Buffington and their two daughters, Emma & Mattie.
