Hawkins ISD extends contracts for teachers, administrators

Meeting in regular session on Monday, February 2, the board of trustees of the Hawkins Independent School District approved a recommendation to extend the contracts of all teachers and administrators and called for an election in May to fill two posts on the seven-member board of trustees. Board members also were advised of their individual progress on continuing education.
Acting on the recommendation of Superintendent Dan Rose, trustees extended the contracts of all current teaching staff members as well as a number of the administrators, including the contract for the Curriculum Coordinator, the High School Principal, the Middle School Principal the Elementary School Principal, the Elementary School Principal and the Athletic Director. All contract for these employees were extenced to 08/31/11. The contract of Superintendent Dan Rose was extended in a special meeting of the board January 12.
The board also officially called an election in May 2009 for two seats on the Hawkins ISD Board of Trustees. The two seats are currently filled by Clayton Atteberry and Steven Holland. Superintendent Rose also provided the board with a report on progress on the final punch lists for the construction and renovation project, noting continued movement toward final completion.
All of Hawkins current board of trustee members have completed more hours of training than the minimum requirements of the state. Nine hours of training are required and the individual members completions are listed below: Clayton Atteberry-20 hours; Shane Bogard-15 hours; Wende Haney-12.5 hours; Steven Holland-15.75 hours; Bill Holmes-24.5 hours; Edwin Simmons-16.25 hours, and Ed Tunnell-18 hours.
At the special meeting of the board held January 19, the board approved a recommendation by the administration to add a fourth Kindergarten teacher and class to deal with overcrowding. A teacher who had been serving in a reading laboratory position accepted the Kindergarten post and the 68 students have been distributed among the four teachers and classrooms.
The next regular meeting of the Hawkins ISD board is scheduled for Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. A special meeting of the board may be held with 72-hour advance public notice.
