Teresa K. Sellers is new Auditor;Master Gardeners work acknowledged
By JOHN SPARKS

Meeting in a holiday schedule session Tuesday, December 23, Wood County Commissioners approved the appointment of Teresa K. Sellers as Wood County Auditor, recognized the work of Wood County Master Gardeners, heard the annual report of the Information Technology department and acknowledged the past service of two elected officials who did not run for re-election.
Commissioners approved an order by G. Timothy Boswell appointing Teresa K. Sellers to the post of Wood County Auditor. Sellers replaces Becky Burford who served in the post for 24 years. By Texas law, the presiding Judge of the State District Court serving a county appoints the auditor. Boswell is the Judge of the 402nd District Court serving Wood County. Sellers' appointment is for two years.
Wood County Master Gardeners presented their annual report to commissioners. The presentation featured a mock check in the amount of $90,604.44, representing 4,644 hours of volunteer time donated by members of the group. Member of the group provided gardening and landscaping services in all four precincts of the county, including major projects at the arboretum in Quitman, and the Mineola Nature Preserve. Wood County Extension Agent Clint Perkins said the group has been recognized statewide among medium-sized counties.
Randy Parish, director of Information Technology for the county provided commissioners with an annual report of the department's major projects in the past year, noting that virtually all of the projects provide improved responsiveness and access to the county's citizens. He noted the new on-line property records management system and the new system providing for the on-line payment of taxes, fines and fees by credit card as two examples. Parish said the department has worked to improve coordination between the IT system utilized by the appraisal district and all other county departments. He credited the new IT systems installed at the county's four JP offices as a major factor in collecting $228,000 in back fines and fees dating back to 2003.
Commissioners recognized the service of Roy Don Shipp, Precinct-1 Commissioner upon his retirement from the post. Shipp had served in the office for two four-year terms. A large contingent of Shipp family members were on hand to join the court in a reception following the meeting. Shipp, who chose not to run for re-election this past election cycle, said it had been a pleasure and privilege to serve. Hope Gaskill, Constable Precinct-2, who also chose not to seek re-election to the office this past year was also recognized by the Court for her service.
In other action the court approved:
- payroll of $278,622.07.
- claims of $303,426.10.
- Chris Parker to serve on Wood County Industrial Commission Board of Directors representing the City of Yantis.
- Georgia Cameron to serve on Wood County Child Welfare Board.
- revised agreement with Southwest Mobile Imaging for x-ray needs among Wood County Jail population.
- submission of renewal agreements for insurance coverage through the Texas Association of Counties.

Personnel actions taken at the meeting included:

- Mark Allen Smith, rescind resignation letter, deputy sheriff, WCSO.
The next regular meeting of the Wood County Commissioners Court will be Friday, January 9, 2009 at 10 a.m. A special meeting of the court can be called with 72-hour public notice.
