E-mail Print PDF

Marine Corp League Detatchment 1278 has kicked off the 2008 Toys For Tots campaign in Wood County. Ralph Griffith, Holly Lake Ranch is directing the local area campaign.

The Marine Corp and Toys for Tots are celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2008. "We know the need will be greater this year due to the unsettled economy," Griffith said, "so we are redoubling our collection efforts."

The chidren to receive toys through the Marine Corp Reserve progran are identified by local service agencies, churches and crisis intervention teams.

Contrtibutors are asked to drop off new toys in the barrels or boxes that are located in various businesses throughout the county. Pickle jars are also located in these drop off locations for donations of cash or checks.
Griffith reports that drop off barrels, boxes and jars are located at the following convenient locations: Brookshire's Food Store, Hawkins; Jewel's Café, Hawkins; Ed's Place; Tammy's Touch of Class; Pro Shop at Holly Lake Golf Course; Holly Lake Ranch Association Offices and at the Griffith's residence, 153 Old Barn Lane, Holly Lake Ranch. Any other business or resident willing to volunteer as a drop off location should call Ralph Griffith at 903 769-9215.

Bill Hamby is the local detatchment Commandant and Lawrence L. Beason is the coordinator for the toy drive.

The Toys For Tots program was founded by Major Bill Hendricks USMCR in 1947. The next year it was officially adopted by the United States Marine Corps. That first year the Raggedy Ann doll was the official toy for the dirve with 5,000 being distributed. Last year, more than 20-million toys were distributed to more than 8-million children in all 50 states, Washington D.C., Peutro Rico and the Virgin Islands.
