Tax rate set at 45.4 cents;
EtxCoG 9-1-1 contract OK'd

Meeting in regular session, Monday, September 15, the Hawkins City Council approved a property tax rate of 45.4 cents per hundred; approved a 9-1-1 addressing contract and approved payment of approximatley $6,800 fo compressor repair for the Hawkins Volunteer Fire Department.

The council officially adopted the tax rate of 45.4 cents per hundred. This represents an increase of about a half cent from the current rate.

Council also approved renewal of a contract with the East Texas Council of Governments to continue using the organization's 9-1-1 addressing services for the City of Hawkins.

After considerable discussion about spending by the Fire Department which was not specifically budgeted, council approved payment of a bill of $6,800 submitted by the VFD that had not specifically been the subject of a budget amendment prior to the repair of a compressor.

The city's investment policy was the subject of discussion because the Mayor and City Secretary had recently purchased a CD of $99,000 in a local bank for a 14-month period. City policy as currently written does not permit any investments over 12-months. The consensus of the council was that the policy should not be changed. As a result the investment was moved from a 14-month contract to a 7-month contract with a penalty of loss of interest for the one week that the 14-month contract had been in effect.

In other action, Mayor Sam Bradley reported he was confident that bids expected for some improvements to the exterior of City Hall would permit improvements to the front of the building. Previously, more comprehensive plans for improvements to the awning and painting of the building were rejected as too expensive.

The Mayor also received approval to vote for incumbents to serve on the board of directors of the Texas Municipal League Intergovernmental Risk Pool.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Hawkins City Council is scheduled for Monday, September 15 at 6 p.m. A special meeting of the council can be called with 72 hours public notice.
