Savannah Boyd Wins First Place at National TSA Contest

Savannah Boyd won first place in the nation in the Promotional Graphics event at the 2008 National TSA Competition in Orlando, Florida last week. She and four other graduated seniors from Hawkins High School competed in the week long event. Students from HHS attending the conference were: Savannah Boyd, Katie Garcia, Connor Montgomery, Aaron Norman and Cory Rhoades.

The Promotion Graphics event was entered by 216 students from across the United States. Each student is required to design a promotional image for the next year's conference. The design is to incorporate the TSA logo, the theme of the next year's conference and the name "Technology Student Association" somewhere on the final product. Her winning image will be used by TSA, Inc. on T-shirts, posters, conference promotional booklets and the conference program for the next year. Texas TSA will also be using Savannah's image on state contest materials for the 2009 state conference.

Savannah's award is the first top 3 award for Hawkins High School at a national contest in 7 years. The competition is very fierce and getting students to the stage for the top 10 is difficult. Coming home with a top 3 trophy is very special and quite an accomplishment when you consider the number of students in events at the conference. Over 4200 students competed in 35 events at the high school and middle school levels. Of that 4200, only 350 are called to the stage as top 10 finalists. Of that 350, only 105 students received trophies. So, with 105 students at the high school and middle school levels, almost 4000 students go home without a top 3 trophy. Texas schools won 3 first place trophies as a of those in home at Hawkins High School.

Next year's National TSA Conference will be in Denver, Colorado in June of 2009.
