Parking lot, street improvements OK'd;
Code of Conduct, handbooks adopted
By JOHN SPARKS

At a special meeting of the Hawkins Independent School Board, on Tuesday, July 24, trustees approved a shared cost agreement on upgrades and improvements to parking lot repair and repaving projects and approved the 2007-2008 editions of the Student Code of Conduct and the Faculty Handbook and Faculty Handbook. The council also approved the hiring of a teacher/coach on a one-year probationary contract.

The trustees approved a plan to invest $94,900 of school bond interest earnings in upgraded plans for the parking lot and some of the drives into and out of campus. The contractor providing the construction and renovation services funded by the $15,000,000 bond issue passed in December 2005 will absorb $49,691 of the costs for these improvements since truck and heavy equipment movement has damaged some of the parking lots and drives on the Hawkins ISD campus.

As a result the student parking lot at the north end of the campus near the football field will be repaired where necessary and top-coated with two inches of new asphalt. The south parking lot near the elementary campus will also be repaired and top-coated. Sections of roadways leading to the parking lots will also be repaired and top-coated.

Trustees also reviewed and approved the proposed Student Code of Conduct, the Student Handbook and Faculty Handbook for the 2007-2008 school year. Most of the changes were recommended by the Texas Association of School Boards to assure compliance with changes to the state laws enacted by the recent session of the Texas legislature.

In other action, trustees accepted the resignation of a math teacher and hired a Richard Dickerson, a teacher/coach on a one-year probationary contract.

Trustees are next scheduled to meet Thursday, August 16 at 7 p.m. A special meeting of the board can be called with 72-hours notice.
