Local Women Attend TRFW Legislative Day at the Capitol

E-mail Print PDF

The Republican Women of Wood County were represented by Helen Heavey, Jeanette Sterner, Shirley Haskins, Betty Dubbs, Barbara Caffery, Isabel McGuffin, Jane Byrd and Reita Fowler at the Texas Federation of Republican Women Biennial Legislative Day in Austin.

More than 1000 Texas Republican Women formed a sea of red, as they swarmed all over the beautifully refurbished Capitol visiting their Representatives and Senators. Both the Texas Senate and the Texas House recognized the women in their Galleries by reading proclamations.

Several of the Wood County Women attended a Senate Committee Hearing on Toll Roads and the Trans-Texas Corridor. The club members were given a tour of the Capitol by a staffer of Representative Hughes. In addition, the ladies attended a luncheon at the Convention Center where Governor Rick Perry, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and Speaker of the House Bob Craddick were the guest speakers. Many elected officials were in attendance and were recognized. The Republican Women of Wood County invited Representative Bryan Hughes to attend as their guest. "It was great having these ladies in Austin," said Representative Bryan Hughes. "The Republican Women of Wood County have helped me so much - I really don't know what I'd do without them." After the luncheon the women attended informational and educational workshops organized for the occasion. Topics included Immigration, Ground Water, 2008 Elections and Club Leadership.

All interested women in the area are invited to attend the monthly meetings of the Republican Women of Wood County and to become a part of this active political organization. Meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 11:30 a.m. at Gormani's Pizza in Quitman.
