Murchison senses public anxiety over U.S. debt

Syndicated columnist William "Bill" Murchison spoke to the Republican Women of Wood County on July 18th and said that he feels there is a general anxiety among the population in general about the U.S. debt situation. "The sense is out there which is inchoate, unformed, in the public mind," he stated. It is a feeling that there needs to be "something new. We can't continue to spend more than we take in."

Murchison has been a journalist since 1964. He has been with the Dallas Morning News since 1973 where he now serves as senior columnist. His column has been nationally syndicated since 1981.

He is also a senior research fellow with the Texas Public Policy Foundation which for over 20 years has been a leading state policy think tank. It promotes limited government, low taxation and local responsibility.

Relative to the recent session of the Texas Legislature, Murchison noted they closed the budget gap that was looming for fiscal years 2012-2013 by "reducing spending for the first time in half a century."

In response to a debt question, he said that the debt (money) question goes together with the question of basic freedoms. He also stated that the Cut, Cap, and Balance bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives, including a path to a balanced budget amendment, would likely not pass the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate.

Murchison also noted that he thought that Governor Rick Perry may be serious about making a run for the White House.

th will be Chip Roy who collaborated with Rick Perry on his book, "Fed Up" which describes the struggles that state officials face in dealing with an ever more powerful federal government.
