Meeting in regular session Tuesday, May 4, the board of directors of the Hawkins Community Development Corporation (HCDC) approved two unbudgeted expenditures totaling $1,000 on the Youth Sports Park improvement project. The board also reviewed construction progress on the project and discussed offers of financial assistance from Ozarka.
HCDC directors voted to fund mortar coloring at a cost of $350 and to contract with a professional painter for the painting of six doors and jams at a cost of $650. The board also acknowledged offers of painting and other assistance by students and coaches from Hawkins ISD Keith Cook, The volunteers will be put to work.
Representatives of Ozarka advised board members of the firm's willingness to provide financial support to fund scoreboards, paint work and bulldozers for additional dirt work. Board President Frank Rucker will discuss details of the proposal and bring these back to the board for discussion and action.
Progress on the Youth Sports Park project includes the completion of brick laying on the new concession stand, the setting of plumbing fixtures and the beginning of the application of sheet metal.
The board also approved the treasurer's report given by Jerry Jones. He said the ending balance in the operating budget at March 31 was $22.918 and stood at $41,393.42 at the end of April. No funds were spent during the month of April.
Board member Herman Peace reported the Chamber of Commerce is participating in the sponsorship of the annual Veterans Tournament at Holly Lake Golf Course June 1, in the framers market at the City Park Pavilion on Saturdays and in the planning of an Arts & Crafts Festival in the City Park next spring.
The next meeting of the HCDC is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9 at 4 p.m. A special meeting of the board can be called with 72-hours public notice.
