Wood County Commissioners Court
Hotel /Motel tax upped to 7%;
Kirk ok'd for WCIC board
By JOHN SPARKS

Meeting in regular session Friday, August 7, Wood County Commissioners approved a resolution raising the hotel/motel tax to seven percent from the current 4 percent, and approved the appointment of Dan Kirk of Hawkins to the Wood County Industrial Commission board of directors.
The court resolution raising the tax on hotel and motel taxes from four percent to seven percent was passed unanimously without discussion. Initially set at four percent when the tax was established by the cournty in 1997, the hotel/motel funds collected through the tax is restricted to use in promoting tourism and overnight stays by state law. The Wood County Industrial Commission selects projects for financial support based upon applications for the funds from groups and organizations throughout the county (see story "WCIC calls for applications," elsewhere in this issue). The seven percent tax rate will become effective October 1, 2009.
Based upon the nomination of Dan Kirk by the City of Hawkins for a vacant board position on the Wood County Industrial Commission, the court approved the appointment. Kirk's term is for three years.
In other action the court approved:
- a two-week County payroll of $266,459.60.
- claims and payments totaling $227,638.48.
- employee and family health care claims of $42,712.92.
- plat for Beech Estates Subdivision (two lots in Precinct-1).
- resolution to change designation of current FM-564 to State Loop 564 at request of Texas Department of Transportation.
- release and pledge securities held at Bank Texas.
- monthly reports of constables from all four precincts for month of July.
- transfer of $100,000 to the Health Plan Contingency (budgeted).
- the purchase of election supplies and equipment using surplus funds generated by rental fees of equipment by various taxing entities.
Personnel actions include:
- Terri M. Calvert, resignation, jailer, WCSO.
- Shannon Marie Maloy, resignation, jailer, WCSO.
- William Joel Vaughn, transfer, from deputy sheriff to jailer, WCSO, from $16.96/hour to $13.79/hour.
