Laura Ragsdale, a senior at Hawkins High School, was recently named a Commended Scholar in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. She received this honor based on her outstanding score on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which she took last year as a junior. Laura is one of approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation that are being recognized for their commended performance. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT.

Laura has maintained an exemplary GPA while taking college-level courses in high school and being involved in numerous extracurricular activities. She is currently ranked number one in her class and has a 5.25 weighted GPA.

"The young people named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding academic potential by their strong performance in this highly competitive program," stated a spokesperson for NMSC, "We hope that this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and that they will continue to diligently pursue their professional goals." Hawkins ISD is proud to celebrate this honor with Laura and her family.
