28th ANNUAL HAWKINS OIL FESTIVAL KICKS OFF

 The events of this year's Oil Festival are set to begin on Saturday, October, 11, 2008 at 7:00 A.M. with a waffle breakfast benefiting the Hawkins Volunteer Fire Department at the fire station.


A Fun Run is set to start at 8:00 A.M. at the fire station, followed by a 5K jaunt. Both races will finish at the fire station. These events are sponsored by The Hawkins Dental Clinic.

A Baby Contest, sponsored by Mothers of Pre-Schoolers, MOPS, will begin at 9:00 A.M. at the Pavilion behind City National Bank.

Parade entrants will line up at 10:00 A.M. on HWY 14 north of downtown. The parade, sponsored by AEP/Swepco, is scheduled to begin at 11:00 A.M.. The route will follow HWY 14 south and turn east on Blackburn St. and disband at the corner of Blackburn and Pine St.

Parade Marshall this year will be popular TV personality, Bob Hallmark.

Auto Show participants will park and set up for viewing and judging southwest/west of the Pavilion. Watkins Insurance Group is this year's sponsor of this popular event.

Live entertainment on the Pavilion stage will begin at approximately 12:30 P.M. The variety show sponsored in part by Wood County Electric Cooperative, will include, Shake, Rattle, and Roll, The C, Class Reunion, Praise Dancers, and The Blessing. Free Admission.

Food and craft booths will be open all day on the grounds. Party Jumpers of East Texas will bring bounce houses and other types of entertainment for kids in the area. An all-day bracelet will be sold for $8 and will cover most of these attractions.

The Hawkins FFA chapter will host an Ag Show from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Red Harris Pavilion located on the school campus.

For evening enjoyment, a street dance will kick off at 7:00 P.M. at the Pavilion. Local favorite Valerie Burns will open the show, as well as appear later during the evening. One of the most popular groups in the East Texas area, Hoss Huggins and the Ponderosa Band will be featured for dancing as well as listening enjoyment. Free Admission.
