Superintendent Rose's contract "Not Extended" by Trustees
By JOHN SPARKS

Meeting in special session Thursday, January 17, trustees of the Hawkins Independent School District voted 4-to-3 to not extend the contract of Superintendent Dan Rose.

Virtually all of the four-hour special meeting was spent in "Executive Session," which is closed to the public and media. The single purpose of the meetng was a discussion of the evaluations of the superintendent by Trustees. As a personnel matter, trustees are permitted to hold such evaluation discussions in closed session.

Near the conclusion of this closed meeting, it was opened for a brief public session, at which time, Trustee Clayton Atteberry made the motion to "not extend Rose's contract." The motion, seconded by Wende Haney, passed with the support of Steven Holland and Edwin Simmons. Trustees Dr. Shane Bogard, Dr. Bill Holmes and Ed Tunnel voted against the motion.

Rose was hired as superintendent of the Hawkins Independent School District in January 2004. Trustees Simmons and Tunnel were board members serving at that time.

Rose's curent contract expires June 30, 2010.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the HISD Board of Trustees is set for Monday, March 3 at 7 p.m. Meetings of the board may be held with 72-hour advance public notice.
